Every listing is worked out per troy ounce of pure silver, postage included: singles, tubes, monster boxes and bags of pre-1947 coins alike.
We show what the silver inside is worth at today's price and how much over that each seller is asking. Old British coins are worked out by date: 92.5% silver to 1919, 50% from 1920 to 1946.
Each coin type has its own going rate for bullion, proof, circulated and graded coins, so a worn half crown is never compared with a proof.
New sellers and low feedback are flagged, and prices far under the going rate get a "too good to be true?" warning: fake silver is common.
Silver-plated copies, empty boxes, capsules, coin jewellery, gold versions and post-1946 cupro-nickel coins are taken out before anything is priced.

For bullion coins, judge the premium: the price per ounce over the silver price. Today silver is £43.02 an ounce, and 1oz Britannias on eBay go for about £66.46 an ounce including postage (54% over silver). Old and proof coins carry a collector premium, so compare them with the going rate for the same coin and condition, which every coin page shows.
Crowns, half crowns, florins, shillings, sixpences and threepences dated up to 1919 are 92.5% silver. From 1920 to 1946 they are 50% silver. From 1947 they are cupro-nickel, with no silver, apart from Maundy money and proof coins struck in silver. Our silver coin checker works it out by date.
Mostly, if you buy from sellers with long, high feedback and pay through eBay, which covers you with the eBay Money Back Guarantee. Be wary of prices well under the silver value, stock photos of bullion from new sellers, and listings that say "silver plated", "layered" or "copy". We flag these for you.
Silver is subject to 20% VAT in the UK when bought new from a dealer, which is part of why the premium is higher than on gold. Britannias and other UK legal tender coins are free of Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. This isn't tax advice: check your own situation.
