What the silver price means for coins
A coin's melt value is its pure silver content times the spot price. A 1oz Britannia holds one troy ounce of silver, so its melt value today is £42.76. Buyers pay a premium on top for minting, VAT and the dealer's margin: on eBay a 1oz Britannia goes for about £66.46 including postage, 55% over spot.
Old British coins hold less silver: a pre-1947 half crown has 0.2273 oz (melt £9.72), a pre-1920 one 0.4205 oz (£17.98). Work out any coin with the silver melt calculator or check a date with which coins are silver.
A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than an ordinary (avoirdupois) ounce of 28.35g. Silver prices are always quoted per troy ounce.
